Puppetry in Practice introduces and instills an enthusiasm for the creative spirit in every individual, at any age, through various means of expression. Through
the power of storytelling—using centuries-old art forms or new electronic media—Puppetry in Practice encourages exploration by partnering with schools in building communities, both internally and externally. We believe the world’s great stories bridge cultures and help young people become aware of their creative selves, the contributions of others and their connections to a global community.
We have 18 artists from all different backgrounds and cultures who bring arts-based programs to 25 schools in all five boroughs. Programs include puppetry, stop-motion animation, giant puppet making, storytelling, music, movement, theater, filmmaking, toy theater, illustration, folk arts and murals. We serve all students, 3K to 12th grade, their families and their school communities.
Puppetry in Practice PiP reaches 25 New York City schools and 15,000 students, 3K to high school, along with school leaders, teachers, parents and other stakeholders each year. PiP provides four- to 20-week in-school and after-school artist residencies in:

Interactive puppet performances, reinterpreting classic stories from around the world, are also featured. With an increased focus on arts-based learning to enhance language and literacy skills, PiP has expanded its work with English Language Learners (ELLs) and Special Education populations, particularly in exploring the diverse cultures of our students’ countries of origin, and the neighborhoods, landmarks, prominent individuals, art and literature of New York.
PiP continues to evolve, embracing new media and STEAM studies, in order to meet the current changes in educational standards and the development of 21st century skills, continually producing unique, high-quality arts programming.
